Miwok 100k Preview and Live Updates

It ain't the Rockies but 1,800 ft in 2 miles is no joke!
There are several people to watch: Evan Honeyfield will eat these climbs like a starving billy goat (Update:  Karl Meltzer informed me that Evan is out).  Michael Arnstein has the pure speed of the bunch but runs hot and cold in longer trail races.  Jorge Maravilla is running well but coming off two fast 50 milers in the last three weeks - his legs will be dull.    Other dudes who could be top ten:  Chris Price, Chris Wahen, Kevin Shilling, Adam Lint.  Will Mackey race?  If so, he owns it.

For the ladies: Megan Arborgast (2nd last year) looks like a good pick.  Helen Cospolich will be in it for the win too.  Mary Churchill has speed and home court advantage.  Other ladies to do well: Helen Lavin, Ragan Petrie, Tia Gabalita.

Coming off an inspired run at the Diablo 50k on the 21st, I had to nurse a (really) sore calf last week plodding through 32 miles (one run of 16 miles while course marking).  Got out yesterday for a 8 mile run in 55 mins, progressing from 7:30s down.  Everything seems to be working normally and any little kinks will be worked out with my two visits to Bay Area Chiro Care and Dr. Christina this week and I'll hopefully be ready for Miwok by Saturday.

I'm fortunate enough to have a friend turn over her house in Mill Valley to me for a couple weeks, so race morning won't be too traumatic but I'll still need to wake up at 3am for the 5am start. (MUST REMEMBER HEADLAMP…)

I'm also very fortunate to have a crew of fine ladies headed up by Lauri and Karen.  They're VERY organized (I'm not), so I'll have no whiny excuses for slow aid station stops.  The weather looks perfect, albeit a little warm, and I'm going with one handheld bottle and plan on increasing my salt intake about 50% to fight the cramping I've had over the last couple races, which probably caused the calf injury.

The course is beautiful and challenging and the competition is huge.  Can't wait to line up in the dark with the other 500 folks.

Live webcast of the race (my bib number is 214), so people may follow along, is at:  http://ultraresults.net/miwok/pages/overall_results.php?ek=SLhB9C

  1. I second the increase of salt for the weather I had calf cramps at 6hrs in both the Diablo 50k and Leona Divide 50m. I won't be anywhere near you in the race but good luck and run smart.

  2. Thanks for posting Tim.

    My two cents:

Gotta watch out for Thomas Crawford and Jesse Haynes as well. Will Jorge Maravilla show up afer running Lake Sonoma and Leona Divide so recently... and running both hard? I doubt it, but if so I want to say he couldn't hang in the front, but I'm not going to say that because I could see him and his big smile passing dusting me and most others.

What about Brett Maune? Sure he usually just races Barkley (and sets a CR) but he also recently set the FKT for running up Bear Canyon to the top of Mt. Baldy:

I'd be surprised if Mackey doesn't win if he shows, or Honeyfield if Mackey doesn't race.

Looks like you've been racing well lately Tim. Good luck!

  3. Hey Chris.
A couple of the guys you mention don't have much longer distance experience, it's hit or miss. Maune definitely has extreme talent. It'll be interesting to see him in a true race. Look forward to seeing you saturday!

  7. See you out there, though you'll be way ahead! I just hope to finish and not have my foot problem flare up. Another woman to watch who's running super strong: Jen Benna.
