I'm thinking about making the drive over to Silverton, CO from the Bay Area beginning on July 8th or 9th (race starts on Friday, July 13th at 6am). It's a pretty long yet cool drive going through some nice places and I'd be happy to detour over to the Grand Canyon before and/or after the race.
The crewing would basically consist of telling me what a great job I'm doing and holding back looks of shock at my appearance, along with handing me some needed clothing and food, etc. I don't want to force my main pacer to cover too much ground, so a pacer from Ouray (mile 45) to Sherman (mile 72) would be nice.
Looks like GZ is the man!
Here's my race report from last year. It can't be that bad again, right?

It was a crazy snowy year last year.

Icy wet feet all day, all night, and all next day.

Fun little deadly water crossings.

Views that leave you speechless.

All for a buckle (that you have to purchase). Well, that and the knowledge that you finished something that will change your existence.

If you're still looking for a pacer from Ouray to Sherman, I'd be glad to lend my services. I'm captaining Chapman, but we should be packed up in plenty of time for me to join you. I have yet to experience Hardrock myself, but after Grand Slamming last year, it (& Barkley) are next on my list. :) Email me if you're still in the market & would like to chat.
ReplyDeleteI might be able to help you slog through another long one. Getting back from an overseas trip on July 7th. Need to check w/ the family to see if they'd be up for a trip to Silverton.
ReplyDeleteAt least your chances of drowning will be less this year, since the deepest water crossing is at the beginning.
ReplyDeleteSnow is only about 50% of what it was last year, so this year could be a lot different.
Thank Christ!
ReplyDeleteHell if you need me to I'd go from 45 to the finish :)
ReplyDeleteOooooooo I might be able to crew. Being sober is optional, right? You'll waste no time at aid stations because I'll be throwing empty beer cans at you.
ReplyDeleteHey Shaun, if you're serious, I'd enjoy having you throw beer cans at me at Hardrock.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely serious. I just need to check that's not the weekend family is visiting and that I can take off work.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep you posted.
Is there a guide as to where the aid stations are on the course, which are reachable by crew, etc?
Wow. Leave it to my Colorado friends to offer their services! I also received a few emails from folks and it looks like George Zack will be pacing and hopefully Shaun will be hanging out at aid stations chatting with the ladies while waiting to ridicule me as I pass through.
ReplyDeleteIf others want to have an excuse to visit the San Juans, come along with us and be a part of an epic event!
You realize GZ got lost on the Collegiate Peaks trail, right?
ReplyDeleteYou need more help or know any other front runners who do? I'm going to be in UT on vacation and have decided to come pace at HR- just need a runner...
ReplyDeleteUh,did you tell GZ about having to piggy-back you across the streams to keep your little tootsies dry,and to belay you as you go across Bear Canyon trail after Ouray, just put it in very fine print in the contract he signs that exempts you from any and all danger he will go through.
ReplyDeleteHey Jon. I'm sure you'll find a runner. I'll let you know if anything changes for me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Randy, I love tromping through the rivers (when it's reasonable). Brownie was the one last year who looked like an acrobat trying to stay dry while crossing them. If Bear Canyon Trail is the one with the steep drop offs, then, yeah, it's hair raising. It was dark when I ran down it last year, so it didn't seem that scary.
Touche Brownie. I better start working Google maps to figure out how to get to Ouray.
