Felt the same about the Leadville $15 fee. Perhaps its residual from when I used to buy concert tickets now and then, but I have a visceral reaction to those horribly annoying "convenience" fees. Wouldn't it be swell if they just said what the fees were for...or even just buried them in the darn entry fee (or didn't charge them at all). Why break it out? Just pisses me off.
Yeah, expensive... That is part of the reason I don't race, I am too cheap. In addition to that, I don't even really like to race.
I saw that California permit costs have skyrocketed, which is making many race registrations go up. I guess the state budget deficit has to be closed somehow and God forbid cuts me made to dumb programs instead of fee increases. Anyway, I think $165 for Miwok is pretty stiff. I heard that Badwater charges $995--$995 for a race that offers you zero aid.Wyatt
Do you want the optional race insurance also? Only $25 per day. But that'll only get you Bronze coverage. When I first read that, I was thinking "Niwot 100k".
Good point by Jim - would you feel better if there were zero fees of any kind but the registration fee were $175? I bet many would. They could charge like a rental car:* $75 entry fee* $25 permit coverage* $15 non-recoverable supplies for volunteers* $25 police/security overtime* $10 convenience fee* $10 race shirts* $10 purchased food/drink supplies* $5 shuttles gas surcharge
I really wanted to run a local inaugural 20 mile trail race a few months back to see what it looked like. Then I went to sign up and saw it cost $70 dollars. $70 for a 20 mile run! Eeek.
175.00 is too much for me. The "processing" fee is just the fee to use online registration, not the event cost. Makes "being green" by not using US Mail seem not so appealing.
The Hinson Lake 24 Hour run is $24. Its of course all you can eat and drink. And you get a shirt. And a coffee mug. Hell, depending on who you ask, you might even be able to get a reacharound.I'm not sure if I want to do it next year, but at that price I feel like I have to. I might just go run 50 miles as fast as I can and then leave. There is a 50 mile fatass run here in Charleston in 2 weeks I am thinking about. Free. Can't get any better than that. There's a 50k thats 3 hours up the road from me I've done 3 times. About 30-40 participants. $30. You get a thick, well-made sweatshirt. And other stuff. And as with the rest of these you get to chase half-dressed women through the woods. And (usually) not get arrested.
I hear ya brother. At least it's 12 miles longer then AR50 for the same price, but I don't think the processing fee is as much. I think the only thing getting processed is our back side! Makes just going for a long run in the mountains much more appealing, then entering some race for yet another T-shirt. Fortunately(hopefully)I won't get in to Western States. That's like a financial disaster. -Grae
Yeah, Brett. Plenty of options to chase the ladies.Terri Hayes puts on several great events down in your neck of the woods. I think all her races are donation only. Fully stocked aid stations, post race food, awards, good time for how ever much you can afford. Here's her site: http://ultrasontrails.com/
Grae, I'm racing the rucky chucky runabout 50k in March. You running any of that series he puts on?
I'll do the "Roundabout" probably if I don't get into WTC. I've run it a couple of times a long time ago. It is pretty amusing watching about a dozen people fly down to the river only to trash their quads and do a lot of walking back to the finish. The only other one I'm interested in is Mokelumne Riner 50, but it conflicts with my daughter's B-day, so it's going to probably be Lake Sonoma. I'm kind of a last minute guy. Sometimes I want to race, sometimes I don't. -Grae
Tim, I thought Rucky was cancelled last year due to permitting issues or something. Would be very cool to meet you (and Grae) down there to race. Working on a schedule that I'll email you soon.Race fees are getting out of control!
Is it finally time for Occupy Ultra Street? So we tell all those rich ultra RDs with their private jets and mansions that enough is enough? T
