Last Minute Pre-Race Thoughts

A photo from GZ's door to Bear run last Saturday (him in yellow, me in white).  Photo by Mtnrunner2

Aside from worrying constantly about the weather forecast for the race Friday, I'm feeling good.  Getting out for my last little run today then packing and getting ready to catch my flight in the early AM.

Though it's silly for me to look at the other competitors, I can't help thinking about it.  Eric Storheim is the the one to beat in my mind.  Dan Vega showed he's got some wheels in the early season, Jay Aldous is full of toughness and experience, Mark Tanaka can pull out a fast 100 whenever he wants it seems.  Karl is always the favorite no matter what his level of readiness is.  He just popped off 70 miles at CTM100 when it was canceled mid-race last weekend but If he's at the start line of any race, he's the one I expect to cross the finish line first.  It'll just be a delight for me to start a race with him again.

With the start not until noon Friday, I'll have plenty of time to fiddle with start clothing and gear.  The high humidity on the island is going to make the 30 degree night temps feel extra clammy and chilled.  Better than 100 degrees, I suppose.

Here's to a fun, safe, and successful race for everyone in the 100mi, 50mi, 50k, and 25k.  Race Director, Jim Skaggs, really cares about putting on some of the best races, and it shows.

  2. Dang, already packed the tropical tan gaiters (didn't want to soil my pink ones in the snow/mud).

  4. Tim-
Jay's out. He's running the 50. I don't have enough vacation accrued at the VA hospital to the the day off, so I don't start until 6 pm. It will be a long night after a full day of poking at vets teeth. Even with 70 miles, Karl is the one to beat. If he had 100, he might be beatable, but those last 30 are what really take it out of you. Just another training run for him. Look forward to seeing you out there.

  6. Thanks a bunch, guys.
Erik, man, I'm sorry you're starting later! You'll likely at least miss the crappy weather. Hell, I bet you'll still place high at the finish even with a six hour handicap. I know I'll be looking over my shoulder later in the race.
Look forward to seeing you there.

  9. I'll go with Karl for the win and you and Mark battle it out for second. Erik would be up there but six hours is a little late. And I also predict you reach 50 miles before dark ;)

The weather looks interesting - 1-3 inches of snow tomorrow. Should add to the challenge especially given lack of any significant vegetation to provide protection.

Hope you have a good race! Look forward to hearing how it goes...

  12. They're letting storheim start at 6pm and his time will be official. The race starts at noon. Uncool in my opinion. I was going to post tweets during the race but it seems pointless now since we'll have to wait for Erik to finish to know the results. Letting folks essentially run a completely different race and counting it isn't right. I know I shouldn't worry about it and I have a full day handling my own race but Erik is the favorite and it changes my strategy and frame of mind. Start late if you want but the race clock should start at the scheduled time.

  13. I've seen that happen at triathlons were someone shows up and misses their wave, but the race directors let them join a later wave.

I think in good spirits if the race crew can handle it, then they should let someone start late in special cases. Just my opinion. But they should not be in the mix for overall awards for obvious reasons. Age group awards maybe.

  14. Never planned on running an official time, unless I could have made it to the start with everyone else. Unfortunately, I'm still at work while you started 30 minutes ago. I'm just looking forward to a nice run on the island.

  15. Jim said it would count. Moot point as far as I'm concerned. I dropped out at 50 miles.

  16. Just twisted my knee early and wasn't in the frame of mind to push past 50
