| Finish line at Rocky Raccoon 100 Miler |
Granted, I don't really care about football or pro team sports in general BUT I knew the superbowl was this week...sheez.
I'm more excited to get updates tomorrow on the Rocky Raccoon 100 race. The mens race should be a sprint with lots of carnage after 75 miles. I'm really looking for Liza Howard to run well and would like to see her nab the women's course record set by the scantily clad Jenn Shelton (14:57). That was set on the older, easier, faster course, so if Liza breaks it, well, wow.
Me, I'm in that weird no-mans-land of transition into a taper the last 7 days before a race (Cool Trail Run 34 miler). Run, not run, how hard, hills, flat, I don't know. I'm in good shape and want to hit the start line fresh and hot to race. I'll fly into Reno Thursday and stay with my friend Darren, hang out with him Friday, then drive over to Cool, CA race morning. Darren is racing too and is in sharp shape after a solid block of consistent training. I'm looking for him to run over an hour faster than his finish last year.
Good luck to the runners at Rocky Raccoon tomorrow and good luck to whichever teams are playing in the superbowl.

I love the Superbowl! I can't wait to see if anyone hits a home run!
ReplyDeleteI would make the kind of argument I make to Jehovas Witnesses about Christmas that I would to most (especially men) about the SB. It's a tradition that involves hanging with people you like (family in my case), watching our culture show it's private parts, and drink a few beers and eat some yummy homemade junk.

For me, Superbowl Sunday is just a better day to go snowboarding since so many people will be doing indoors (instead of on the slopes) what Matt describes. I mean, jeez, it's not like it's the Tour de France or something.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of a big deal in my neck of the woods...but at the same time I'll be excited to have Monday come, so we can move past it.
ReplyDeleteWe had a huge snowstorm come thru last week and the state was pretty much shut down on Wednesday. I think there will be even more people calling in on Monday, though.
Lucho, don't you know anything? The shoot baskets!
ReplyDeleteFF, see you on Thursday. I'll give it my best to make your prediction come true...the coaching has been good, now lets see if the runner can come through!

The sad thing is that I loved football as a kid. I knew every stat of every player. Of course, players stayed with the teams that drafted them, touchdown scorers merely handed the ball to the ref and jogged to the sidelines, they respected the game. That was when it was a game and not a commercialized shell of a circus. Now gimmie a beer, damnit!
ReplyDeleteDarren, you're going to be stomping Sanchez out outlasting Long at that race. 5:10 is my prediction for you (no pressure).
I hope Ray (Sanchez) is there. Not for stomping (which would take huge effort) but because he is a fun competitor and a cool dude. He has one heck of a running resume!
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling pressure but it's positive!

I take pride in my ignorance in mainstream sports. When I first moved to Colorado in 1996, I had NO idea who John Elway was.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I'll be watching the Superbowl on Sunday (just an excuse to eat pizza and cheesy nachos really). Be sure to catch Aron and I running Green Mountain on Dateline NBC after the Superbowl (8pm).
Tim, where will you be following Rocky? Twitter?
I hear you on the pre-race no-mans land. Except I probably have much less of a clue than you as to what is the best approach to take the final two weeks. 20 miles today hard in the hills? or and easy 12 miler....and the tough part is that there's no standard answer since it all depends on how I'm reacting/recovering from the most recent training. It seems like race week itself is a bit easier, just run light and easy and rest up! But I'll probably be going through the same questions as you next week. I am curious though, what did you do for a long run 2 weeks out?
ReplyDeleteHey Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI like taper week. I've fiddled with tapering for the last four years and have found that I do best with roughly 50-60% normal mileage two weeks out and then about 30% the week of the race (100's even less).
Last weekend I did 24 miles and 5,000 ft climb in 3:42 for my last hard outing.
Cool. That feels about the same as what I had in mind for myself...but I think I'll stay closer to a 3 hour run today. How much vertical does your 34 mile race have coming up?
ReplyDeleteIn typical footfeathers fashion, I don't have a clue about the course other than the winning time was 5:16 and it's long at over 34 miles.
ReplyDeleteHilarious
ReplyDeleteIn my defense, after you mentioned it I did at least remember it was this weekend. I even know who is playing!
ReplyDeleteOn tapering, I think a lot of people tend not to rest enough - especially for 100's. I think a solid 3-week taper is best if you really want to have the best possible race. But that somewhat depends on what you want to get out of the race - training run or best possible performance.
Looks like RR started out pretty quick...7:20 pace for the first 40 miles! I think there might be some carnage :)
